Leatrice Fullerton, Disability Network Southwest Michigan

Leatrice is the Program Manager of Advocacy & Community Education at Disability Network Southwest Michigan. Here Leatrice talks about her passion for advocacy and the work she does with Disability Network.

I have been with Disability Network Southwest Michigan for the past seven years. During this time, I’ve had several different positions within the agency. Currently, I am the Program Manager of Advocacy & Community Education.

The reason I’m drawn to this work is that I know what it’s like being on the other side of the desk. I know what it’s like trying to get services from agencies who aren’t willing or able to assist me.  For this reason, providing exemplary customer service is very important to me. I can relate to the customers we serve in a number of ways; I am a person with a disability, and I know what it’s like to face different barriers. I have made it my life goal to advocate for and be a positive representation for people in all of the marginalized groups that I belong to. I do this through my work with Disability Network, as well as with volunteering for several other agencies in Kalamazoo. In my current position, I’m able to assist Disability Network in carrying out its mission of educating and connecting people with disabilities to resources while advocating social change!
